Karlin Daniel
King of the bidding wars    If you’ve assumed that auction is simply standing in front of a crowd and rattling off dollar amounts at machine-gun speed, spend a few minutes with Karlin Daniel.      The noted auctioneer and community leader found a Model T hidden in the hayloft of a barn he was inspecting prior to sale. He taught Burt Reynolds to be a successful auctioneer at Chris Evert’s annual Tennis Classic several years ago – Burt didn’t think fellow guests were bidding high enough and strode on stage to join Karlin, who, with his usual charm and good humor, took the moment and ran with it, teaching Burt a heretofore unknown skill.      Karlin says, “We brought auction into the area 20 years ago and have tried to use it to the benefit and betterment of the community.  We’ve received more than 100 awards over the years and were named corporate philanthropists of the year.”	The charities that touch Karlin Daniel most deeply are the ones that involve kids – Molly’s House, Hibiscus House and St. Michael’s School are among those whose events his firm has been involved with over the years.  “It’s hard to say no to anyone, but since we usually donate our time to the not-for-profits, we sometimes must.  We also want to make sure we don’t become stale, duplicating the same event year after year.  It’s good for them to get out of a routine and try something different, too.”      Historical organizations snare Daniel’s interest.  He’s on the Board of Trustees of the Historical Society of Martin County and has served as chairman.  Add to that his active roles in Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Martin County, the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, Stuart Sunrise Rotary, Leadership Martin County and a host of others, and you’ll have the personification of a community leader.        Lucky for us his boyhood dream to be a farm auctioneer led him instead from the land of tobacco to the land of sunshine. n      Jackie Holfelder
